Scope
The Automation Technologist is responsible for executing complex automation tasks under general supervision with a focus on device integration into automation applications supporting business units. The role supports automation host systems, troubleshooting, and ensuring high-quality data within automation platforms.
This position serves as a technical resource in automation systems and collaborates closely with operations and facilities engineering teams to implement and support automation solutions. The role includes supporting automation projects, maintaining system uptime, and ensuring compliance with industry standards while supporting field operations and automation initiatives.
Responsibilities
• Support device integration into automation applications across field and corporate automation environments
• Provide ongoing support to automation host systems including data analysis, database updates, and maintaining system uptime
• Perform point-to-point checkout and maintain automation documentation
• Configure and commission field devices and troubleshoot alarms, communications, and hardware issues
• Provide daily technical guidance and automation support to field operations teams
• Maintain local historical automation data and address data quality issues in collaboration with automation teams
• Work with operations and facilities engineering teams to develop and implement field automation solutions
• Support and drive automation projects from planning through implementation
• Design and implement automation pilot projects and contribute to development of automation standards and guidelines
• Identify opportunities to enhance field operations through automation and support value assessments for those initiatives
• Collaborate with automation teams to identify strategic automation opportunities
• Provide automation support to Decision Support Centers (DSC) when required
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and recommend automation system enhancements
• Manage and prioritize multiple automation projects simultaneously while adhering to project management standards

Technical Skills
• PLC Programming (Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLC)
• Automation system troubleshooting and diagnostics
• Automation system design and implementation
• Experience working with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), including ABB 800xA
• HMI development and support
• Field device integration and commissioning
• Knowledge of ISA and IEC industry standards
• Equipment maintenance and regulatory compliance practices
Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related discipline — or equivalent work experience
• Minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience
• Experience in E&P operations with focus on oilfield automation, instrumentation, production operations, or process control device integration preferred
Preferred Certifications
• Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST)
• Industrial Electrician (Red Seal Endorsement)
• Instrumentation and Control Technician (Red Seal Endorsement)
