Key Responsibilities
Brownfield Verification and Facility Reuse
- Support the Project Development Engineer by verifying existing brownfield facility conditions, constraints, capacities, and opportunities for reuse.
- Engage Operations to identify facility considerations, operability concerns, maintainability requirements, equipment limitations, and constraints associated with using existing facilities for new production.
- Document brownfield verification findings, including affected systems, facility boundaries, equipment capacities, tie-in feasibility, shutdown requirements, and reuse constraints.
- Identify brownfield risks and facility limitations early enough to influence project scope, design, cost, schedule, and execution decisions.
- Develop preliminary execution plans for well pads, tank batteries, production facilities, flowlines, pipelines, tie-ins, and related infrastructure.
- Develop detailed pipeline routes and engage Construction to identify constructability concerns, routing risks, access requirements, land constraints, and execution limitations.
- Identify demolition requirements, shutdown needs, sequencing considerations, field conditions, and other risks that may affect scope, schedule, cost, or safety.
- Establish preliminary execution organizations, staffing requirements, responsibilities, and resource plans appropriate to the project scope.
- Coordinate with Operations and Construction to confirm that proposed execution strategies are practical, safe, maintainable, and constructible.
- Monitor and lead junior engineers in developing process-design specifications and supporting technical deliverables.
- Develop or oversee heat and material balances, design flow plans, process-equipment designs, preliminary hydraulic balances, and utility balances.
- Develop or verify the technical basis for basic process controls, instrumentation, materials selection, and required safety facilities.
- Lead or perform process-optimization studies to identify and evaluate process-configuration alternatives, facility-reuse opportunities, safety requirements, and potential capital or operating-cost savings.
- Confirm that project concepts align with existing facility conditions, applicable standards, Company methods and guidelines, project specifications, owner requirements, and established execution assumptions.
- Develop and maintain redlined P&IDs, plot plans, preliminary routing layouts, tie-in-point identification, and other field-based planning documentation for brownfield scopes.
- Prepare reliable field-verification packages and technical documentation for Gate Reviews and handoff to Project Execution.
- Clearly document design assumptions, facility constraints, execution risks, shutdown requirements, and unresolved technical issues.
- Support drawing verification and standard-design reviews based on actual field conditions.
- Provide technical oversight of engineering-contractor work during front-end engineering and design and detailed engineering.
- Review contractor deliverables for consistency with Company methods and guidelines, project specifications, design standards, and owner requirements.
- Coordinate the resolution of technical questions, design inconsistencies, constructability concerns, and field-condition conflicts.
- Monitor engineering progress and deliverable quality to support execution readiness and reduce rework.
- Perform early process-safety risk screenings to identify potential hazards, design considerations, operating impacts, and risk-management requirements.
- Participate in Hazard and Operability Reviews for new or modified facilities and in support of existing operating facilities.
- Identify personnel-safety and process-safety considerations during project development and incorporate required safeguards into the technical basis and execution plan.
- Support Gate Review inputs, Design and Execution Plan development, change documentation, permitting requirements, and execution-readiness deliverables.
- Coordinate with Surface Land and Regulatory stakeholders regarding permitting, right-of-way, access, land constraints, and regulatory readiness.
- Provide commissioning and start-up assistance for new or modified facilities, as required.
- Support readiness reviews, system turnover, startup planning, and resolution of field issues.
- Enable a smooth handoff to Project Execution by clearly communicating project risks, assumptions, constraints, technical requirements, and readiness needs.
- Support the transition of projects after Gate 3 with complete and reliable execution-planning documentation.
- Coordinate with Project Controls regarding cost, schedule, planning assumptions, risk exposure, and execution-readiness forecasting.
- Engage Procurement and Supply Chain regarding equipment demand, long-lead equipment, inventory availability, and material readiness.
- Promote a collaborative team culture built on clarity, ownership, constructive challenge, and trusted partnerships.
- Contribute to process improvements that reduce rework, improve project handoffs, and strengthen execution readiness.
- Provide direction, technical guidance, and mentorship to junior engineers supporting project-development activities.
